Elves

No one is sure just how many elves there are in [insert name of entire land] because most elves live in Darkwood. At any given time, there are thirty to forty honorable elves in Taros who have been assigned to gather information and make sure that there are no major problems in Taros. If trouble is brewing that could possibly damage the balance of forces in nature, then more elves are sent into Taros to keep the peace, if you will.

However, though there are only a few honorable elves in Taros, there are several elves and many people with elven blood in Taros who are outcast from the Elven society in Darkwood. These elves and elf-blooded individuals are considered 'Dark Elves.' Although they are not dark-skinned, as the fabled Drow, thet are considered 'dark' because they have turned away from the light of Eru, the Father and Creator of All.

Even though most citizens of Taros have heard of elves, very few know that there are different races within the elves. It is not specified just what those classifications are, but they do affect every aspect of the individual elves.

  • Physical Description

Elves have hair color usually ranging from golden blond to pitch black or, in some extremely rare cases, silver which is considered to be the most beautiful hair color of all. Most of the time, the elves have grey eyes, but occasionally their eyes vary anywhere from blues and greens to browns, and every so often, to purple. All elves have fair skin, but those who spend a good deal of time in the sun have lightly tanned skin. On average, the elves within Taros, appear to be at their full height, which sees to lie between five-foot two-inches and five-foot ten-inches, but there are rumors that it is merely to hide their appearance, and that almost all elves stand at over six-foot tall. They have the high cheek-bones and slightly-pointed ears characteristic of their race, as well as the slanted eyes, thinner faces, and generally more slender, graceful frames.

  • Religious and Moral Beliefs

All of the Elves in Darkwood, as well as the honorable elves in Taros, believe in Eru, the Father and Creator of All, but they do not have official times or ceremonies for worship. The elves also believe that only Eru has the ability to give his people independence and free will, through what is called the ˇ§Flame Imperishable.ˇ¨
    - The dark elves may or may not follow Eru. It depends on why they were classed as dark elves and banished from Darkwood.

Since elves see all creatures belonging to Eru, Elves do not eat meat, nor do they involve themselves in bloodshed of any kind, unless there is no other choice (ie- War.), but even then they do not find pleasure in the taking of another life. As such, before any fighting, the elves take the preparation time and spend it in silence, asking Eru to watch over the souls of the fallen individuals, whether Mortal and Immortal.

  • Life Cycle

Elves are born almost one year from their conception. Since the Elves believe that life begins at the moment of conception, the Elves celebrate their day of conception rather than celebrating their birthday. Since the elves’ minds mature quicker then their bodies, young elves often seem older than they really are. By their first year, they can speak and walk, and even dance. Elves age at a rate of about one to five meaning that elves age one year for every five years of life. When they reach their fiftieth year, the aging slows down slightly to about one to seven. When an elf reaches their hundredth year, they appear to be about eighteen or nineteen. At this time, they have reached their full height. After an Elf reaches their hundred and fiftieth year, they appear to be around twenty-five (give or take) and that is when they stop aging. As more years pass, some Elves may appear slightly older, but it is not physical aging, it is simply an appearance of aging.

Elves marry freely and for love early in their life. They only marry once, and they mate for life. A betrothal can be broken by returning the rings each partner received at the beginning of the betrothal, but that rarely happens. At the marriage ceremony, they give back their betrothal rings and receive others worn on their index fingers, and the groom receives a jewel from the bride’s mother. However, the only things required for marriage are the words exchanged by bride and groom, including speaking the name of Eru, and the consummation of the marriage. Relations outside of marriage do not exist within Elven society, and are thus unheard of. As a general rule, Elves have few children, with relatively long intervals between each child. The days of raising children are greatly cherished.

In daily life, the Elves tend to put their talents to good use, indulging in creative arts. Females often specialize in the healing arts whereas males usually specialize in the fighting arts. This split is because they believe that taking like interferes with being able to preserve life. However, these roles are not rigid; females can defend themselves just as well as males, and many males are skilled healers.

Elves are naturally immortal, and they are immune to all diseases and can recover from wounds which would normally kill a mortal. However, they can be slain, or die from grief and weariness. Elves who die or are killed to a Purgatory-like place where their spirits are cleansed before they return to the other Children of Illuvatar(Eru) (essentially Heaven). For those who are do not die, their immortal spirits overwhelm their bodies leaving them invisible to mortal eyes, except to those whom they wish to reveal themselves.

Names: Elves typically receive one name at birth that has little to do with their personality. This name (called the Father-name) was given by the father and reflected either the name of the father or mother. As the Elf grew older, they are given another name by their mother. This second name was extremely important in that it reflected personality, skills, or fate. Since it would have been considered rude for someone to use the second name if that someone did not know the Elf well, that someone would use the Father-name. There is also an ‘after-name’ which is given later in life, not necessarily by kin, as a title of admiration. In some cases, the Elf choses his or her own ‘after-name.’ Even though and elf could be called by any of the three names, the ‘after-name’ was generally used.

  • Current leader

The current leader of the Elves is Queen Sinye-arasse, meaning “Evening Deer.” Due to human-kind looking for an easier equivalent, she is sometimes referred to as Queen Damhnait (pronounced: DEV-nawt), meaning “Little Fawn”, or even Queen Damh which simply means “Fawn”, but the names have basically the same meaning, if a little shortened.

Queen Damh is a mysterious figure to most citizens of Taros because very few people were alive during her last venture into Taros, nearly seventy years ago. She is said to be kind and fair, as most Elves are. She usually sends Elven scouts into Taros to keep an eye on the Realms. For the most part, the Elves do not interfere with quarrels between the Realms unless it is something that affects the whole of Taros. In those cases, Queen Damh sends a few soldiers into Taros to help whichever party is trying to keep peace between the Realms.

Any dark elves are generally not recognized by the Queen, and as such are not under her control. She does, however, acknowledge the Fëanturi when it is absolutely necessary, but they are seen as one of the worst kind of dark elves. The Shapeshifters are not consider dark elves.

Note: This is not complete. More information will be added shortly dealing with such things as politics and talents.
